I'm blogging about my home, a Midwest farm in Indiana and my travels, hiking & horseback riding, wherever that may take me. Visit often to get your outdoor "fix"! Whether it be from the back of a horse, in hiking boots, or in muck boots, I promise to share a little of Mother Nature with you as often as I can! All pictures can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Coyote
I spied this girl (looks like a feminine face) across the creek from me.
She was off like a shot when she saw me!

Tiny Tree Frog
As I was going through the gate today, I noticed and odd lump on the fence.
It was a tiny tree frog.
So I moved him to a safer place.
(Love those tiny suction cup toes!)
That's a better spot!

Lumbering Along
This moving rock caught my attention on my morning hike.
Quite a large snapping turtle!
The video doesn't show how large it it, probably 14 inches across the shell.
I got some close-up shots of it before it submerged.

What Happened Here?
This pile of feathers was on the trail this morning.
From the size, I could tell it was a large bird
and from the striped feathers with reddish color on them,
I think it was a red-tailed hawk.
Hmmm, I wonder who caught this elusive predator?

Tradgedy Averted
Our house has one problem.
Birds crash into our windows, often killing themselves.
I'm not sure if the angle of the sun has something to do with it,
but they seem to think they can fly right through the windows,
with tragic results.
This juvenile robin hit the window and luckily survived,
although he was stunned quite a bit.
I picked him up from the porch and held him until he got his bearings
and put him in a tree.
He perched there for over an hour and finally flew away.

Please Don't Eat The Daisies
Yesterday's trail ride included a trek along the power line easement.
Our neighbor has planted fields of flowers there.
Rocky thought they were beautiful & delicious!

Share the Trail
This little guy was hopping across the trail as I hiked.
There are lots of little toads out there so remember to share the trail.

Flying Flowers
Butterflies are the spikes of colors that flit into our view when outside.
Spicebush butterfly
Pearl Crescent butterfly
Southern White butterfly
Hummingbird moth
Tiger Swallowtail
When you start to look for them, you'll be surprised at their variety of colors & patterns,
if you can catch them holding still long enough.
Unfortunately, I only spotted one monarch butterfly and couldn't snap his photo.
They are not nearly as numerous as they were in my childhood.

LIttle Brown Bat
This little guy was clinging to the house.
They are great bug catchers especially mosquitoes.
And no they won't fly into your hair.
This guy was trembling as I took his photo.
