I'm blogging about my home, a Midwest farm in Indiana and my travels, hiking & horseback riding, wherever that may take me. Visit often to get your outdoor "fix"! Whether it be from the back of a horse, in hiking boots, or in muck boots, I promise to share a little of Mother Nature with you as often as I can! All pictures can be enlarged by clicking on them.

Pileated Woodpecker
Yesterday on my morning walk,
I kept hearing wingbeats behind & above me.
Almost like something was stalking me.
Then I spotted this normally secretive pileated woodpecker
in the tree above me.
These are the largest woodpeckers measuring up to 16 inches from crown to tail.
They are the model for Woody the woodpecker.

Horse Toys
Horses are the most flighty of the domestic animals.
They have no horns or teeth to defend themselves,
so running away is their mode of preservation,
although they'll kick if cornered.
Horses run first and ask questions later,
so we try to teach our horses to stop and study the situation,
instead of running off.
Horse toys help them learn the lesson.
Big moving balls are quite scary.
Fluttering flags sound like attacks from above.
What the heck is that?
This isn't so scary!
Looks like we've run away to the circus!

Its Not Easy Being Green
While geocaching with my daughter,
we discovered a mossy pond with lots of frogs.
We had to look pretty closely to spot them.
They blend in so perfectly.
Plop!
And they are gone!
