National Park #27

My bucket list includes visiting every national park in the U.S.
Congaree National Park in South Carolina was park #27.

Congaree preserves one of the last remaining floodplain forests in the country.

Because the park floods an average of 10 times a year,
the main trail through the forest is a 2.4 mile elevated boardwalk.
During our visit, the forest was mostly dry.
I think it would be even more mysterious when it is flooded.

The periodic flooding nourishes the soil,
allowing the trees to grow to some of the tallest heights in the eastern U.S.
Several champion trees are found in the park.

Wildlife, such as otters, owls, woodpeckers & squirrels, flourish here too.
