Spy Cam

I put the wildlife camera back up yesterday.
I placed it near the poached deer
hoping to get some scavengers.
Here's what I captured!

Snowy Day

We missed a white Christmas by 2 days,
but it is still pretty.

Sandhill Cranes

Christmas day began with a brilliant sunrise
and was a beautiful clear sunny day.

While walking the visiting grandpups,
we heard Sandhill cranes flying overhead.

I guess its time for them to move farther south.
January and winter weather are on their way.

Poacher!

Remember the deer earlier this month that had the unfortunate accident?
Well, it seems it wasn't an accident.
I found a second dead deer on our property.
The carcass was covered with logs & sticks
and appeared to have been dragged to the location.

It had a small hole in the neck,
possibly from a gunshot or arrow.

Its obvious that the logs are deliberately stacked on the deer.

Possibly the person who did this has already taken his allotment of antlered deer
or killed these deer out of season
and they were just used for target practice.
What a shame that the meat was not used and
both of these young bucks, if allowed to live,
would have had even larger racks next year.
Such a waste.

Soggy Season

December has been a wet & warmer than usual month.

The trails are waterlogged.

The creek is out of its banks.

Pastures are flooded.

Even the deer are soaked.

Rain, rain, go away!

Unfortunate Casualty

This buck appears to have been hit by a falling tree limb.
We had high winds several nights ago
and it seems that the branch fell on the deer and jabbed him in the neck.
At first I thought he'd been shot,
after studying the scene, it just didn't fit.
He was covered with broken branches.
He made it through most of hunting season,
only to perish in an ill-fated manner.

Christmas Kitty

Simba loves the Christmas tree.
It reminds him of the great outdoors.

Aw oh, busted!

Santa brought a kitty!

Sorry Maggie, I'm not a gift!

Seasons Change

Seems like just a few short months ago
we were playing in the swimming hole.

Now it looks desolate & cold.

And the trails that were so lush & green

Are now muddy & bare

But it does allow for better wildlife watching.
