Apache Trail

The Apache Trail originally was a
stagecoach trail through the Superstition mountains.
Today, if you are adventurous and not bothered by heights,
you can drive the 40 miles of unpaved road from
Tortilla Flats to Roosevelt Lake.

Yes, that white spot in the center of the photo is a car.

Drivers, keep your eyes on the road!

Apache Trail Tip

Some people may think that the drive up is a bit easier than the drive back. On the way up, although the turns are tight and the road is narrow, at least you have the mountain on your side not the cliff. Obviously, if you turn around and go back the way you came, your return trip might be a bit more harrowing.

The road twists & winds, following the Salt River
and going through Fish Creek Canyon.

You will see 3 man-made lakes.
This is Apache Lake.

There are several pullouts for incredible desert views.
Photos just cannot show the vastness & beauty of the area.

Finally you arrive at Roosevelt Lake.
It took us 2 hours to travel the 40 breathtaking miles.
A must do drive, if you dare!
