Acoma Pueblo Sky City

We are in New Mexico, checking off another item from my bucket list, the Balloon Fiesta.
We'll see the balloons in a few days, but in the mean time, we visited Sky City.

Sky City is the home of the Acoma Pueblo people, based 370 feet above the desert floor on a mesa.

There are both historical & modern adobe homes on the mesa.  Some Acomas still live on the mesa, making it the oldest continuously inhabited community in North America.

There are over 300 structures made of adobe (mud brick) and sandstone.

The mission was built in the 1600's.

Sky City is a mix of old & modern architecture.

Although we took a bus to the top of the mesa, our Pueblo guide gave us the option of climbing down the carved stairs when we left.  It was exhilarating to climb down between the canyon walls placing our feet on the steps & our hands in the hand holds like generations of Pueblos have done for hundreds of years.
