Flying Flowers

Butterflies are the spikes of colors that flit into our view when outside.

 Spicebush butterfly

Pearl Crescent butterfly

Southern White butterfly

Hummingbird moth

 Tiger Swallowtail

When you start to look for them, you'll be surprised at their variety of colors & patterns,

if you can catch them holding still long enough.

Unfortunately, I only spotted one monarch butterfly and couldn't snap his photo.

They are not nearly as numerous as they were in my childhood.

Late Summer Flowers & Flutters

Late summer blooms seems dominated by

bright yellow, such as this Wingstem,

bold purple, as in this Ironweed

and blue, found in this Chicory

with a little orange thrown in (Jewelweed).

The butterflies are flocking to the flowers,

getting the last of the nectar.

And the hummingbird moth is still going strong.

Flutter by

 The butterflies don't seem as abundant this year.

But I did see a few yesterday that I managed to photograph.

This tiny butterfly has a blue tint to his wings.

I think he's an eastern tailed blue butterfly.

The moth-like silver spotted skipper.

The common cabbage butterfly

The spicebush butterfly on ironweed.

The striking tiger swallowtail on a butterfly bush.

I'll just "stick" this guy in with the butterflies, 

a bumblebee on red clover.
