I just returned from southern Illinois
and found a very interesting place.
A cypress swamp.
Yep, a swamp reminiscent of a Louisiana bayou,
but in the Midwest.
Its Heron Pond in the Cache River State Natural Area.
It is in a floodplain carved years ago by the glacial
floodwater of the Ohio River.
There are cypress trees that are hundreds of years old.
And a few are even older than 1000 years
such as this ancient one.
A must see if you are in southern Illinois.
